Reverend Garland W. Ward was born in Frederick, Maryland on August 28, 1920. He was reared in Pittsburgh, PA and Baltimore, Maryland graduating from Frederick Douglas High School.
He briefly attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. before serving 14 years with the United States Coast Guard (U.S. Merchant Marine) as Able Bodied seaman/quartermaster. Licensed to handle any ship of any tonnage in any body of water any where in the world. He was blessed to have visited 67 countries while serving in every area of hostility during World War II.
He was licensed to the Gospel Ministry January 5, 1938 at Perkins Square Baptist Church in Baltimore and Ordained at First Baptist Chrch in Carona, New York on March 1, 1961. Later he attended Columbia University for two years.
Rev. Ward served as Assistant to the Pastor; Dr. Johnny Ray Youngblood at St. Paul Community Baptist Church Brooklyn, New York 1979 - 1990. He retired and relocated to Houston April 1990 and united with Brentwood. He began serving as Minister of Visitation January 1993. His duties include visiting the sick, attending wakes and funerals. He also serves as utility whenever and wherever the opportunities are presented.
He is the father of one daughter who holds a Master's Degree and a tenured HISD teacher and the grandfather of two Middle School grandsons. |
